No. 6 Virginia at Virginia Tech game info 6v4h1s
- Date: Saturday, February 4, 2023
- Tipoff:Â 12:00pm ET
- TV Coverage: ESPN2
- Location: Cassell Coliseum, Blacksburg, Virginia
- Participants: No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (17-3) vs Virginia Tech Hokies (13-9)
Kicking off one of college basketball’s best Saturday cards of the season is a bitter rivalry game taking place at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. It’ll be Tony Bennett’s No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers heading into enemy territory to take on Mike Young’s unranked Virginia Tech Hokies.
After beginning the season as the No. 18-ranked team in the AP Poll, the Cavaliers have skyrocketed all the way up No. 6 after tearing through an impressive non-conference schedule and jumping out to a 9-2 start in ACC play. Virginia will enter this one currently on a seven-game winning streak, with the team’s last loss occurring back on January 3 on the road at Pittsburgh. Among those seven wins was a home victory over the Hokies in Charlottesville to the tune of a 78-68 final score. Virginia managed to cover the 5.5-point spread at home in front of a sellout crowd that night, but will be dealing with a much more difficult environment on Saturday afternoon for the rematch.
Virginia Tech is amidst an overall decent season at 13-9 overall, however they currently sit towards the bottom of the ACC standings with a 3-8 record in league play. The Hokies, similar to Virginia, did put on a strong showing during the non-conference portion of the team’s schedule, picking up wins over Penn State, Minnesota, Dayton, and Oklahoma State, but will not be in consideration for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid if they cannot turn things around in February. With three games against some of the ACC’s bottom-feeders in Boston College, Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech up next on the schedule for VT, an upset win over No. 6 could go a very long way for the Hokies’ March Madness hopes. Expect a blistering crowd in Blacksburg to lift Mike Young’s squad to a much-needed win, effectively lifting the Hokies back into striking distance of the bubble.
