The U.S. is back in the round of 16 for the first time since 2014 and seeking its first quarterfinal appearance since 2002, when that World Cup co-hosted by Japan and South Korea offered plenty of surprises and upsets. The other position where Berhalter may change things up is at striker, though that may be out of necessity based on Sargent’s availability. Haji Wright could get his second start, considering he has the potential at 6-foot-3 to at least bother imposing Netherlands center back Virgil Van Dijk. Jesus Ferreira has yet to see action in Qatar and could move up the pecking order if Sargent cannot go.

The Netherlands, which has been World Cup runner-up in 1974, 1978, and 2010, made it out of group play for the 10th time in as many appearances. The Dutch won Group A by claiming seven of a possible nine points, with wins over Senegal and host Qatar bracketing a draw versus Ecuador. Louis van Gaal’s side tallied five goals while conceding just one in the three matches.

Van Gaal, who is in his third stint as manager and guided the Oranje to a third-place finish in Brazil in 2014, has seen Cody Gapko emerge as his team’s top offensive threat. The 23-year-old PSV Eindhoven striker ed Jonas Neeskens, Dennis Bergkamp, and Wesley Sneijder as the only Dutch players to bag goals in their first three World Cup matches and in the hunt for the Golden Boot. Perhaps more impressively is that he has needed just four shots to claim those goals.

The Netherlands also have offensive threats beyond Gapko, most notably Memphis Depay.
